
Gioia is an independent multimedia journalist based in Kenya, exploring how communities, contemporary cultures and current affairs are shaped by the past.
She writes for the Financial Times, Zeit Online and New Lines Magazine amongst others.
Prior to that she was a correspondent for the German Press Agency (dpa) covering over 20 countries in East and Central Africa. She also worked as a journalist in Jordan, Tunisia, the UK, Germany and Turkey.
Gioia was the Chairperson of the International Press Association of East Africa (IPAEA), which represents over 300 journalists working for international outlets. She was also chosen as one of the top 30 journalists under 30 in Germany by Medium Magazin in 2016.
She grew up in Germany, South Africa and the UK. She did her bachelor’s degree in history at the University of Edinburgh and master’s degree in Late Antique and Byzantine Studies at the University of Oxford.
